Natalie Amey (00:00)
Ella hadn't thought about God in years. She buried him somewhere beneath the heartbreak and the drinking, convinced he had nothing to say to someone like her.
Hi there, welcome to Faith and Flow. I'm Natalie Amey and I'm so glad you're here. Today's story is called The Dance Floor and it's about a woman searching for something to numb her pain but finding herself instead in the presence of God. If you've ever felt like you're drowning in loneliness or trying to escape a broken heart, the story might resonate with you. Let's dive in.
Ella didn't remember how many shots she'd taken that night. Tequila burned less when you drank it fast, but by the fifth round, she didn't care about the burn or anything else. The club was packed, bodies pressed together, lights flashing in dizzy patterns. The bass from the music vibrated in her chest, but instead of feeling alive, it made her feel hollow.
Like the sound was trying to shake something loose inside.
She'd been here every weekend for months, chasing the same thing, numbness. If she could just drown herself enough in alcohol and noise, maybe she wouldn't feel the aching loneliness that had settled in her chest after he left.
Maybe she wouldn't hear his voice echoing in her head. I remember the way he looked at her when he said, "you're too much". Ella didn't cry about it anymore. Not since she'd learned to drink the tears away. But tonight was different. As she danced in the center of the floor, surrounded by strangers, something cracked open inside of her. The music swelled.
The strobe lights flashed and she stood still, letting the crowd move around her like she wasn't even there. She tipped her head back and for a moment she thought, I'm disappearing. But then it hit her. The alcohol wasn't numbing the pain anymore. The music wasn't drowning out the loneliness.
The crowd was fulfilling the emptiness. It was all still there. Louder, sharper, unbearable.
Ella stumbled off the dance floor and into the bathroom, locking herself in a stall. She sank into the floor, head in her hands. She felt like she couldn't breathe. The walls of the stall pressed in on her, the tiles cold against her legs.
can't do this." She whispered, her voice cracking. It wasn't even a prayer, just a plea into the void. She didn't expect an answer, but in the suffocating silence, something happened. A memory surfaced, uninvited, her grandmother's voice soft and steady, saying,
You can call on Jesus anytime, baby. He's always listening."
Ella hadn't thought about God in years. She buried him somewhere beneath the heartbreak and the drinking, convinced he had nothing to say to someone like her.
But now, sitting on the floor of a club bathroom, she whispered his name, "Jesus."
It wasn't eloquent or profound, just his name, barely audible over the muffled bass thumping through the walls. And then for the first time in months, she felt it. Peace. Not the fleeting kind she chased with alcohol, but something deeper. It was as if
The hand had reached into her chest and steadied her, quieting the storm that had been raging for so long. Ella didn't understand it, but she knew it was real. She stayed there for what felt like hours, letting the tears she'd been holding back finally fall. When she stood up, her knees were shaky and her makeup was smeared.
but she didn't care. She looked at herself in the mirror and saw something she hadn't seen in a long time....
That night, Ella walked out of the club and didn't look back. She didn't have all the answers, and she knew the road ahead wouldn't be easy, but she also knew she wasn't walking it alone anymore.
This story reminds me of Matthew 11.20. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Ella's story is a reminder that no matter how far we've run, how broken we feel, Jesus is always there.
presence, his power, his love can be accessed within.
His grace meets us in the darkest places.
when we have the ability to...
be honest and take a look at where we are, what it is that we're offering, and to create some space between what we're feeling and the Spirit of God that is with ours.
That's when we get to start to embrace his grace, see his grace, even on the dance floor or on the bathroom floor.
Okay.
Thank you for joining me for this story. If you're feeling lost or carrying a weight you can't bear, I hope this reminds you that God is near, He sees you, loves you, and is waiting to give you the peace only He can provide.
